Abstract
ABSTRACT
@EN Periodic paralysis accompanied with thyrotoxicosis is characterized by intermittent flaccid paralysis of skeletal muscle. The underlying pathophysiology of the syndrome is not yet to be well characterize ad remains controversial. We carried
out
13
cases of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis among 637 cases of hyperthyroidism from March, 1986 to Feb., 1992 in Kyung Hee University Hospital. @ES The following results were obtained:
@EN 1) The prevalence of periodic paralysis in hyperthyroidism was 2 percent and the male to female ratio was 12:1. These results were similar to previous reports in Japanese and Chinese.
2) The clinical characteristics of periodic paralysis did not differ between Korean and other Asian populations.
3) In all patients, the development of periodic paralysis was correlated with hyperfunctional state of thyroid gland.
4) 8 cases of periodic paralysis were associated with hypokalemia and their thyroid hormone levels were significantly more increased than that of the patients without hypokalemia.
Periodic paralysis in patients with hyperthyroidism was certainly induced in association with hyperthyroid state. But it occurs primarily in orientals with an overwhelming male preponderance and prevalence of 2 percent in hyperthyroidism.
Although
the
precise pathophysilogy of the disease is as yet undefined and controversial, the interactive roles of thyroid hormone, Na-K pump, and genetically inherited defect in cellular membrane potential of skeletal muscle can be speculated. Further
investigation
will be needed to estential of skeletal muscle can be speculated. Further investigation will be needed to establish the prutative genetically determined defect in the Na-K pump and the membrane potential abnormality. (J Kor Soc Endocrinol
